Description
It features a crow on a skull. The crow is tucked in a bramble-choked graveyard, in front of a Victorian-era headstone. Tiny imps and spirits peek out from amid the thorns.
This was sketched using a no. 2 pencil onto a piece of poplar lumber, 7" x 25" and 1" thick. It was then painstakingly hand-burned using an Optima 1 pyrography kit. The outlines were done using a knife tip, and the shading with a bent flat tip. The whole piece was then sealed with several layers of polyurethane (it will be displayed inside, away from sunlight, so a more UV-resistant finish was not necessary.)
Total burning time for this piece was somewhere around 40 hours.
Pyrography on poplar
Pen: Optima 1
About the Process:
Each piece is first hand-drawn with pencil (brain to hand to wood). Reference photos may be used, but all designs are my own original artwork.
Then guidelines are hand-burned using a pyrography pen, and all pencil marks are erased and sanded clean.
The piece is finished entirely with pyrography ( hand-burned using a hot pen, similar to a soldering iron).
No computers are used to generate images. No lasers are used to create designs. No routers are utilized to create depth. Very occasionally, I will add bright accent tints of purple, blue, green, or red with acrylic paint; however, all non-chromatic shades are accomplished with burning, and not paints or stains.
