Medieval Bestiary: The Houses
Pyrography on birch wood ply tiles
Pen: Optima 1

These miniatures were created for a Harry Potter-themed show at The Keys venue in downtown Scranton. Each piece represents one of the Hogwarts houses, executed in the style of Middle Ages bestiaries. These illuminated manuscripts featured animal illustrations, which, being illuminated by monks who hardly saw animals, are almost always gloriously horrible.)

A better picture is hopefully on it's way.

Items featuring these images can be found in my Zazzle shop, in the "Fairytales & Fancies" section.

You can see the creation of the House of Badger piece on my YouTube page:

2016 Wasp Courtier
This piece started out as a reinterpretation/play piece on Elizabethan fashion. The gown, hat, and fan of the courtier are all interpretations of Elizabethan-era pieces, and the vine-and-flower "border" is a take on Elizabethan-era embroidery motifs. As I kept working, the stripes on the gown and the wing-like details on the mask started to look bee-like or wasp-like, and eventually she evolved into a wasp-themed Fairy Courtier.

The Wasp Courtier is available on a variety of items in the Zazzle shop:…

A Good Death 1
Never underestimate what you can do with a $1 decoration from Target. I found this birch ply skull in the $1 bins at the local Target, and decided to go crazy and have fun with it. The design definitely takes influence from Mexico's calavera, and the flowers, leaves, and vines invoke the intimate interconnection of life and death.

The loose sketch was drawn directly onto the wood with a No. 2 pencil, and then the piece was hand-burned using an Optima 1 pyrography pen.

A pattern for making your own skull is available to all my Patrons over at Patreon:…

"AGD1" is also available on a variety of items in my Zazzle shop:…
